Fun Science – Professor Boffin

Welcome to the site of SV Educational Services

SV Stands for Science Viking. This is because our two main services that we offer are Fun Science with Professor Boffin and Midgard Living History.

However, we also offer a top quality secondary science teacher for supply services in Cumbria, and personal tuition on all sciences from Key Stage 1 to GCSE, plus A Level Biology.

Professor Boffin

Fun Science with Professor Boffin is the science arm of SV Educational Services. (SV stands for Science and Vikings.) The only Professor of Fun Science, Professor Boffin aims to educate and entertain.

It’s a fact worldwide that as children approach 14 years old many of them start to get turned off science, nobody knows why. Professor Boffin’s hypothesis is that, in many schools all over the world, science is no longer fun. Or rather, the way science is taught is no longer fun.

After many years of teaching the English Secondary Science Curriculum Professor Boffin has decided to bring his own Brand of Fun Science to the country.

You can see Professor Boffin in schools, community and youth centres, festivals, at events and parties all over the country.

One of the many events available for parties, youth groups and to schools is The Fire Show an entertaining and educational family science show about the chemistry of fire.

Professor Boffin leads you through the Fire Triangle, all the elements necessary for fire to burn, then turns his hand to some spectacular and fun demonstrations showing the different forms that fire can take.

“A red hot night, burning good fun!”
“I really enjoyed the show, the colours for the fireworks was really interesting”
“I brought two six year old’s who did not want it to end and this 43 year old really enjoyed it, even when you ignited my £10 note”

Professor Boffin received a phone call from Freemantle Media inviting him to be on Britain’s got Talent. He performed on Sunday 29th January at the Cardiff Millennium Centre in front of up around 4000 people, and the judging panel of Simon Cowell, Alesha DixonDavid Walliams and the TV cameras. He doesn’t yet know  when the programme will be transmitted. Please watch this space for more news on this event!!!

Fun Science

Until then something to whet the appetite!

In 793AD the raid on the holy island of Lindisfarne heralded the start of the Viking Age. For almost the next 300 years the British Isles and the coasts of Northern Europe were terrorized by hordes of terrifying Vikings sailing their fearsome dragon-headed longships across the North Sea.

Or at least that’s the way Hollywood would have us think it was.

Midgard Living History

In reality, although the Vikings did raid many parts of Britain and Europe and  were quite rightly feared, they also had another side. Most so-called Vikings were, in reality, farmers and traders. The people of Scandinavia were from the countries of Denmark, Sweden and Norway. Rugged and adventurous, they raided and traded all over the then-known world, and beyond.

They discovered North America 500 years before Christopher Columbus!!  They also founded the nation we know today as Russia.

Midgard Living History

Midgard Living History aims to give a real-life portrayal of what it was like to be a person living in the Viking Age.

Bjarni Thorvaldrson, Cumbria‘s fiercest Viking, can be seen at the official opening of The Beacon in Whitehaven on Thursday 9th Feb all day, together with Rig and his Viking Longboat.

From there Bjarni will be going off to York for the week long, and world famous, Jorvik Viking Festival.

The remainder of Bjarni’s fierce band, the Herlid Vikings from Cleator, will be pillaging and plundering at The Beacon for the public
opening of The Vikings Gallery on Saturday 11th February.
